First: Do You Have Your Backup Key?
When you first set up your authenticator, Binance shows a 16-character backup key and asks you to save it. Which recovery path you take depends entirely on whether you still have it.
Path A
You have the backup key. You can restore your OTP yourself in minutes, no reset required.
Path B
You don't have it (lost phone, deleted app, no key saved). You'll need to reset your 2FA.
Path A — Restore Using Your Backup Key (Fastest)
If you saved your 16-character key, you don't need to reset anything:
- 01
Install an authenticator app on your new device
Google Authenticator, Authy, or Microsoft Authenticator all work.
- 02
Choose "Enter a setup key"
Use the manual-entry option rather than scanning a QR code.
- 03
Enter your Binance account name and backup key
Type the 16-character backup key exactly as you saved it.
- 04
Log in as normal
The app will start generating valid Binance OTP codes again.
Pro Tip
Some authenticator apps now sync to the cloud, but the Binance backup key is the most reliable recovery method. Treat it like a spare key — store it offline.
Path B — Reset Your 2FA (No Backup Key)
If you can't access your authenticator and don't have the backup key, you'll request a security reset:
- 01
Sign in with your email and password
Open the Binance login page and enter your credentials.
- 02
Select "Security verification unavailable?"
On the security verification screen, choose this option (sometimes labelled "Authenticator Issues").
- 03
Mark your authenticator as unavailable
If you've also lost other methods (SMS, email), select all that apply.
- 04
Verify your identity
Depending on your account, this may include email/SMS confirmation, facial verification, and — in some cases — a short video verification.
- 05
Submit and wait for review
Reviews commonly take 48–72 hours, and a temporary withdrawal hold (often around 48 hours) follows a successful reset.
Warning
A 2FA reset is a major security change. Once it's completed, Binance applies a temporary withdrawal hold — commonly around 48 hours — and the review itself can take roughly 48–72 hours. During this window you can still log in, trade, and deposit; only withdrawals are paused. Exact durations can vary by region and account.
What to Expect in a Video Verification
For higher-risk resets, Binance may ask you to record a short video to confirm it's really you. You'll typically:
- Sit in front of the camera with your face clearly visible, holding the photo page of your ID.
- Read a short statement out loud, including the date, your account email, and which 2FA method you're resetting (for example: "Today is DD-MM-YYYY. I'm applying to reset the security verification (2FA) for my Binance account [email]. I confirm this is my own request.").
- Follow the on-screen instructions exactly — clear lighting and a steady camera help it pass on the first try.
After You're Back In: Re-secure Your Account
Recovering access is only half the job. Lock it down so this doesn't happen again:
- Set up a fresh authenticator and, this time, save the new 16-character backup key on paper and store it offline.
- Enable more than one 2FA method (for example, an authenticator app and a passkey or email), so losing one device never locks you out.
- Before changing phones, transfer or re-link your authenticator, or confirm you still have the backup key.
Prevention Checklist
- Save your 16-character backup key offline the moment you set up 2FA.
- Keep at least two recovery methods enabled.
- Confirm your registered email and phone number are current.
- Don't wipe or replace your phone before migrating your authenticator.
FAQ
Do I need my OTP just to withdraw?
Yes. Withdrawals require 2FA confirmation, so a lost authenticator will block withdrawals until you recover or reset it.
Can I withdraw immediately after resetting 2FA?
No. A temporary withdrawal hold applies after a reset for security. You can still trade and deposit in the meantime.
Which authenticator apps work with Binance?
Any standard app that generates six-digit time-based codes, such as Google Authenticator, Authy, or Microsoft Authenticator.
I have my backup key — do I still need to reset?
No. With the backup key you can restore your OTP directly (Path A) and skip the reset and its hold entirely.
